Newton Retreat Reviews

We had a fantastic stay at Newton Retreat. Jeremy made us feel very welcome and was able to recommend local places to visit. We were greeted to a very generous welcome hamper, which just helped our break get off to a lovely start. The accomodation was clean and tidy on arrival. Beds were comfy and the whole place felt cosy throughout our stay. The location was perfect for visits to Alnwick, Bamburgh and Seahouses. We would highly recommend and would certainly visit again! Thank you for a fabulous week!
Robert
Had a great week. Beautiful location very peaceful with just birdsong. Furnished with style and quality. Hosts Jeremy and Elaine very friendly and helpful but not intrusive.

We thought Newton Retreat overall was a really comfortable and enjoyable place to stay and we really liked Jeremy. Some basic instructions for the kitchen appliances and tv would be helpful and the stock of teaspoons needs be be replenished. A lick of paint here and there and some bits of general maintenance are needed and, in our view would move it from a very good property to a superb place to stay, explore the beautiful coastline and chill out. We loved sharing the outside space with the family of deer living close by.
Lovely accomodation. Everything you need in comfort and quality. Thank you
Gillian
We had a fantastic holiday at Newton Retreat and we were well placed for lots of beautiful local sights. Jeremy was around if we needed him, but the lodge provided everything we needed. Thank you.
Wonderfully comfortable accommodation from which to visit this beautiful part of England. The setting was tranquil and very lovely.
Claire
Newton Retreat was great and just what we were looking for. We were welcomed by the owner Jeremy who gave us a quick tour and showed us how everything worked. There was a lovely welcome pack for us and the house was decorated for Christmas. The kitchen had every utensil and dish I think we could ask for. The setting was great and really quiet which was what we wanted. The sunrises and sunsets were gorgeous and because there was little light pollution the amount of stars at night was breathtaking. The cottage was well situated for Alnwick and there were lots of fab beaches nearby. We have been to Northumberland several times before but have tended to stay nearer to the sea. Being inland with very few buildings nearby was a refreshing change. We would definitely consider booking Newton Retreat for a future visit so we could enjoy the outside space, weather permitting. A great place to relax and unwind.
Excellent location rural and quiet. This is a beautiful and very private property. Ideally situated for the coastal and inland activities, with so much to do with a 30 minute drive. The owner was friendly, approachable, quick to deal with any queries and knowledgeable about the area. I would definitely stay again.
Very niche furniture etc but shame about quality of toilet paper wine tea coffee and biscuits. Accommodation was excellent and host and hostess were fine nothing was too much trouble.
Catherine
Lovely week ago in beautiful surroundings. The accommodation was really comfortable , hot showers and comfy beds. The wildlife was a bonus Handy for exploring this lovely part of the country. Jeremy was very welcoming and friendly
Jennifer
We enjoyed our stay at Newton Retreat. Despite the comments we were sent regarding finding the property & not to use Sat Nav. We did use it and it took us straight there. We had to use it a few times!! The cottage was a real home from home. So comfortable & well equipped. It was very peaceful & just what was needed. The owners were very nice, kind & understanding. We hope it is possible to return.
Carole
We recently stayed at Newtons Retreat and it was truly lovely. The cottage was amazing and the decor was straight out of a design magazine. There was everything you would need for a comfortable stay. The outside space was stunning lots of space to stretch your legs or just sit on the patio furniture with a nice glass of wine.. supplied by our hosts and watch the birds . The hosts Elaine and Jeremy were a lovely couple who would always come over to make sure we had everything we needed. All in all I could not recommend this place highly enough . Thank you for a lovely visit hopefully we will see you again soon xxxx
Excellent property set in tranquil countryside. Well equipped and very comfortable, the welcome basket was much appreciated and thoughtful and the hosts were very friendly.

Dirty . Hasnt been cleaned in years.
On our arrival we thought how lovely it looked on the surface. Once inside we found long blonde hairs and crumbs on both sofas, cobwebs and huge spiders everywhere and thick dust on headboard and bedroom doors. The grouting on the floor in marble bathroom was really disgusting and yellow and all chipped. The carpets in both bedrooms heavily worn and badly faded. I had to look for the vacuum before I did any unpacking. There was also a dirty tissue at the side of the bed on the floor
Alexandra
A beautiful cottage in an idilic location. Would love to revisit in better weather to enjoy the outdoor space. Cottage is very comfortable and well equipped with everything you need for a self catering holiday could have done with a dish cloth for washing up!! Only criticism was an unpleasant oder in the larger bathroom like stagnant water would be good if someone could investigate. I see the property is up for sale, will watch with interest to see what happens when it sells.
Elizabeth
The cottage was really nice. The main drawback was that the track to reach it from the road was an un made cinder track and if we had met another vehicle it would have been a long way to reverse as this track was a quarter of a mile long. The other thing not mentioned is that if you need a shop it is about 4miles to 5 miles away. For nature lovers it is lovely
A very comfortable stay at a peaceful location, which was very convenient for visiting the area's attractions. The only minor downside was the extreme heat in the evening when returning to the farm, where we had to open all the doors and windows to regulate the temperature. Perhaps not a problem on most weeks of the year!!
Sheila
Newton Retreat is a comfortable and well equipped cottage in lovely countryside. There are walks from the door. Many beautiful beaches are within a short drive. We had a couple of issues which were sorted by the friendly owner Jeremy. We had a fantastic week. Please note that you need to let the owner know if you need the twin bedroom made up as a twin rather than a king size.
William
The cottage was very clean and comfortable it contained a great deal of information on places to eat and visit . It is situated in peaceful location with an abundance of wildlife in the surrounding area. The owners were both friendly and helpful .Would have no hesitation in returning there and recommending it to others .
Lesley
I'd give 6 stars if I could. We had a wonderful time, quite the best cottage we've stayed in. So comfortable, lovely friendly owners. There were a couple of hiccups that were soon fixed. A really lovely place.
So quiet. Space for four with great facilities. Wildlife walking past the window hares, roe deer and lots of song birds. Comfortable warm and a welcoming host. Close to loads of places of interest and very beautiful and quiet beaches. Second visit and would come back
Terence
A great holiday cottage with all mod cons and country views from all directions making Newton Retreat a superb base to explore the area or simply chill . Very well equipped kitchen with good quality facilities for cooking and eating. Bedrooms with lovely large beds tastefully decorated and furnished. Ideally located near to Alnwick and the surrounding beaches. Thank you for a very pleasant home for the week and a big thank you for your kind gesture of not only the welcome basket but the chocolates and card for my birtdayday, greatly appreciated.
Our holiday was badly threatened by a depressing recent review Aug 22 which we read before leaving home but which turned out to be totally misleading. Having visited 16 Sykes cottages in the last 8 years we consider ourselves to be seasoned and are used to high standards. However we had an excellent holiday and Newton Retreat is a good centre for visiting very many lovely locations and is a quiet haven after a long day sight seeing. Our pleasure was increased by deer almost at our doorstep, owls hooting at night and not a dog or lawn mower or farmer ploughing in earshot! As we do all our own cooking and never eat out we appreciated the fabulous, wellequipped kitchen...the ovenhob was sublime. The quality of everything was noticeably above average. Both rooms being ensuite, with lots of hot water and very comfortable beds was also appreciated. There are three lovely areas of decking, easily accessible from patio doors andor external steps with countryside views. We found the cottage light and airy. As advised by Jeremy we closed the blinds when out during the day as it was very sunny, then once back opened the patio doors and the windows easily disabling the safety catches! which quickly cooled and ventilated all the rooms. The garden areas surrounding the cottage were well maintained and a pleasure to relax in. The owner Jeremy was very helpful and friendly, but not at all intrusive. Thank you for the thoughtful welcome pack and we are still enjoying the apples and plums.
Yes the property looks great and has been done to a high spec but I think this was done some years ago now and once you scratch the surface it feels now that it is style over substance. Some adjustments would make it a much more useable and efficient property. The Kitchen is very good I thought. 1 The number of cushions and pillows was frankly ridiculous. Looks good but realistically you need an extra room just to store them as they are mostly not required. 2 Unnecessary clutter bowl of fake lemons wasting valuable counter space and 3 huge candle boxes on the dining table wasting space. 3 Very expensive out of date speaker system for Ipods or the like. Has a massively out of date docking connector making the whole thing unusable. Looks good but isn't functional. 4 Windows nearest the dining table don't open which is very odd. 5 The rear decking and view is amazing but is lost as you cant access the rear decking from the kitchendining area only through the main bedroom. This is a missed opportunity and leaves the rear decking unused, Its a shame. If there was a rear door in the kitchendining area leading to the rear decking it would be a game changer. We got there at 5pm and the place was like an oven, it cooks in the summer heat. The windows have a security lock so can only be opened a smidge which meant we couldn't really get any proper air flow to cool the place down. Only at the end of our stay did we work out how to override the lock and open the window wider. This information on how to open the windows wider could have been shared given the heat. Midway through our stay there must have been muck spreading in the area, not the owners fault but it smelled really bad for a few days there was a constant smell and then you'd get a fresh waft in the face that floors you. I get farm smells but that was on another scale. The owners dog decides to bark from 9pm onwards nonstop with noone telling him the shut up. I almost cracked at one point. Strangely as well we also didn't feel very welcome either even though there was a nice welcome basket with wine and biscuits, it just felt fake. I sent the owner a nice friendly message asking him a question about the use of the washing line outside, he ignored my wifes message and I got a one word answer back after I sent another message. Regardless of his intention it felt rude and we felt unwelcome. He also mowed his lawnfields pretty close to where we were staying and so the whole 'Retreat' aspect of the property was lost as we were subjected to various noisy periods during our stay. We really looking forward to staying there but on the whole it was style over substance and I get the feeling that he doesn't like having people on his land but its a necessary evil as the money he's raking in must be huge.
Lovely stay in a great spot. Cottage beautifully furnished. Highly recommended.
Absolutely wonderful stay at Newton Retreat last week. Our third stay in Northumberland and definitely the last time we need to think about where we might stay on another trip. Could not fault anything with this property. We stayed as a couple and found the property perfect in every way. A family of four or two couples would be just as suited as plenty space and storage for up to 4. When we return we are going to book for the summer months to hopefully enable us to use the available outdoor space and surroundings when the temperatures are warmer to sit outside in the evenings. The only noise you will hear are that of birds, the owners dogs when they are having a run around the farm or the occasional train but so quiet, relaxing and peaceful. A lovely welcome hamper of milk, biscuits, wine and crisps was much appreciated. Fabulous location for exploring by car, on foot or as we did mainly by bike. A good five mile return walk to Embleton but perhaps only two or three to the local pubs in Criston Bank or Rennington if you do want to walk to the village pub for a pint or two. Cant wait to return in 2023.
Excellent property. Spacious and light.Well specced, with all the facilities needed. Large comfortable beds and hot showers. Quiet and secluded, but attentive owner close by. Well positioned for exploring the Northumbrian coast. Highly recommended

Newton Retreat was exactly what it says on the label, a beautiful, quiet, calm place where you can appreciate nature, relax and enjoy a break from the hubbub of everyday life. The cottage was clean and warm and welcoming, we would definitely recommend it to our friends and family.
Beautiful, peaceful and well equipped cottage. Great location near to our favourite places and close to those fabulous beaches. We had a lovely stay here, one of the best cottages that we have stayed in. Sadly didnt get to use the fire because we had fabulous weather which was a bonus early November. Highly recommended.
Great location and very good holiday home, Jeremy is a great guy and is always on hand to help with any issues you may have. Certainly would recommend Newton Retreat for your perfect break in Northumberland!
Lovely place, excellent quiet rural location. Lots of places to explore. Great host too.
We were not able to stay at Newtons Retreat because we had to covid isolate. We took out covid insurance with Sykes, however it didn't covid isolating so the cottage remained empty all week and we lost all our money. We'll never use Sykes again.
Robert
Exceeded expectations in a great location for what we wanted to do Dunstanburgh castle, Seahouse, Holy Island and ride out in to the border towns Kelso is a good place to visit.
An absolutely perfect cottage. Luxury accommodation, had everything you could need and spotlessly clean. Beautiful and peaceful location, with wildlife abundant. Jeremy was so helpful and friendly.
Lovely house beautifully furnished great wee touches like white company toiletries. Seating outside to watch the sun go down and so many birds around to watch and listen to. Jeremy was a great host and we had everything we needed for a really relaxing week. It was a cold week so we lot the stove some nights and just relaxed in the comfy sofas. Kitchen was really well equipped too.
