A fantastic house with all the facilities you need. We had a great time and could not have asked for a better stay! 5 stars! Thank you!
Perfect place to stay for a group trip to explore Alnwick and especially Barter Books. Deliciously comfy beds, loads of room and lashings of hot water. Communication with our host was excellent and very helpful. Thank you. Wed love to come back

Elizabeth
Fantastic house. Spacious, clean and comfortable I can home and ordered the mattress I had slept on straight away. Alison owner was extremely helpful when we locked out of the house cold and wet following the MacMillan Mighty Hike. Thank you very much.
Judith
We loved our stay here. The house was an excellent base, and what I called the penthouse 2nd floor bedroom is stunning. There's a convenient corner shop next door, a Coop within site of the property, and a big Lidl a few minutes' walk away. We didn't have cars but visited lots of lovely places by bus, including Seahouses and Amble for boat trips with puffins!, Lindisfarne and Bamburgh. Also enjoyed the castle and garden in Alnwick itself. Great holiday!
A clean and spacious property in an excellent location, less than 10 minutes walk into Alnwick, plenty of eateries and shops. Visited Lindisfarne, Hadrian's Wall, Cragside ... Most locations less than 1 hour from accommodation. Hosts had catered for every need and event including a picnic hamper. Would definitely recommend accommodation and do a return visit.
Two night stay with family. The house is exactly as described. Very spacious, modernised to a high standard, very clean and perfectly located within easy walking distance of the centre of Alnwick. We had 4 vehicles and had no issues parking close to the property. Great communication from Alison leading up to our stay and very comprehensive instructions and recommendations at the property. Would definitely visit again.
We had a very enjoyable stay. The property was well equipped and ideal for our needs. The owner responded very quickly when I made enquiries. I would stay again
Sophie
The photos dont do this house justice. It is huge, really beautifully filled to make it feel like a home from home and Alison the host was so attentive to any question. You can tell that the host family have used this house as they really understand what kids need to be entertained, with a lovely selection of toys and games. This didnt take anything away from the space either, with a really lovely lounge area with plenty of really comfy seating and a lovely log burner. The kitchen was very well equipped with plenty of fridge and oven space for larger groups. All 4 bedrooms are spacious, with nice bedding and towels. 3 bathrooms is needed for a group of 8 so it is fab that there was so much space. We would definitely come back here again. The extra touches like Christmas trees over the festive period made this a very special trip away.
Patricia
My family and I had a lovely stay at The Old Sweetshop which is very spacious with large rooms and is very comfortable having enough seating for a large family. The kitchen has everything you need for meal preparation and we loved the large range. Children are well catered for with plenty of games and even our dog had a bed and blanket! We were greeted with a lovely welcome basket which was a nice touch. I would highly recommend this property for a stay in Alnwick.
Rosamund
Really enjoyed our stay. Location ideal, cottage had everything we needed for 4 adults and 1 dog. We also had to contact the owner for a couple of things, nothing was too much trouble at all. Would highly recommend, thanks for an enjoyable week.
This is a lovely house great location, perfectly clean, well equipped & would comfortably accommodate 8 people. Just 4 of us. Unfortunately only one of the three showers was fully usable top floor is out of order & middle floor showerhead doesnt stay in place so needed to be handheld. Ground floor shower is very good. Wed all stay again & recommend the Old Sweeetshop as a very good holiday home from which to explore the amazing Northumberland coast.
Rebecca
We loved this holiday. Booking with Sykes was really easy, communication with Alison was great and The Old Sweet Shop is very comfortable huge yet cosy and welcoming. Lots of space to spread out in and the selection of board games was brilliant. Street parking was easy, we parked in the lane behind the house with no problems. The welcome basket was such a lovey touch and the two local shops are so handy. The August evenings were surprisingly chilly so we thoroughly enjoyed the stove in the lounge entirely unnecessary, the heating was great but there is a special comfort in a real fire. Alnwick is a lovely place to visit, so much to see and do within walking distance and then the beach and countryside are really close. We didn't use it but the hop onoff local attractions bus seemed like a great idea, especially if you're not used to the hills. Our family are planning their return visit!
My family and I have spent many holidays in the UK. .. This property is one of the nicest we have stayed in. It really is a home from home and there was not one thing that was missing. The house is roomy and comfortable and the location of the property is a 10 minutes walk into the town and attraction. Communication from Alison was great and the welcome basket was a lovely touch. Off road parking was lovely and having a shop next door was handy. The road noise was not an issue and was not noticed. Lastly the beds were comfy and we slept well. Thank you for a lovely property and making a good holiday great
Joanne
This was a great house for a group of friends. We were on a cycling weekend and there are lots of routes from Alnwick into beautiful surroundings places. The house is so roomy and we loved the comfy living room and separate dining room with huge table. The owner warned us about the water pressure not being great on the top floor but there are two other showers that work perfectly and an enormous bath on the top floor. The mattress on one of the double beds was a little thin and not as comfortable as the other beds all the others were great . We had a wonderful stay at the old sweet shop and would definitely book again. We felt a little chased out by cleaners on Monday morning. They parked up in the alley as we were packing at 9.30. We were not due out until 10. They were knocking on the door bang on 10. We were done but felt a little hassled. This did not spoil our stay in this fabulous house. We really enjoyed it.
The cottage was lovely, very spacious and one of the best equipped weve ever stayed in! there was even a bed & blanket for the dog. In one room there was a huge selection of toys which was greatly appreciated. It was very clean with plenty of available cleaning products for us to use along with spare dishwasher tablets. There were other essentials like tea & coffee, salt & pepper etc left for us too. Communication & instructions from the owner before had were both very clear & good which enabled us to get to and into the house with no problems.
Jacqueline
As a family of grandparents, children and grandchildren we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Old Sweet Shop, which is a lovely spacious comfortable house, within an excellent location. We would certainly return.
Lesley

Michele
The property exceeded expectations ! The property was gulley equipped with everything you would expect and more. The furnishings and fittings were well maintained. The beds were extremely comfortable with the bedding being of a very high quality you would expect to find in a 5 hotel Alison owner communication was over and above and it was very much welcome even though we did not need to contact, our group felt we wanted to give her our feedback on how fabulous her house was
Stephanie
Enjoyed our stay very much. A beautiful house. Ideally situated for Barter Books and exploring Alnwick on foot. Also for scenic drives to Cragside and the coast or bus trips. Very spacious comfortable house with thoughtful details. Already planning another visit.
This is one of the best holiday homes we've stayed in Its very spacious, ... This is one of the best holiday homes we've stayed in Its very spacious, comfortable, well equipped and spotlessly clean, the photos dont do it justice regarding the space available Very comfortable beds and quiet neighbourhood The position couldnt be better to explore Alnwick and the surrounding area and there are shops very nearby for essentials Really good communication from the owner
Just perfect, gorgeous warm house. Exceeded all expectations. Much larger than we thought which was brilliant for our family. Emails from HostSykes regarding the property were really helpful and accurate. Folder in the kitchen .. invaluable help. Host have thought of everything to make your holiday relaxing. Location is near all amenitiesattractions and parking was easy.
We had a wonderful time in spite of the awful weather. The property is fantastic in most respects and very comfortable. Beds and pillows very comfortable. Kitchen is very well equipped. The only thing I recommend here is a fruitlemon squeezer. The fridge in the kitchen is far too small even for a stay of five nights needs to be twice the size. We could not get any heating to come on and this was a major problem as the weather was so cold for July. We followed all the instructions but the boiler did not come on. There was not enough toilet paper for a family of 8 for five nights and the quality of the paper was very poor. These are fairly minor points but we believe they need to be addressed to make this property a truly five star experience. Finally, can we say a very big thanks from all the family. We would definitely recommend and would stay again.
We were a group of friends staying for the weekend to do the Macmillan Mighty Hike. The property was ideally located in central Alnwick, very clean it accepts pets but you would never know and super comfortable. The owner communicated really well, currently a broken shower on the top floor, but with two others in the house this did not bother us. I would definitely stay here again, thank you!
It was an excellent property for 8 people to stay in without being on top of one another. The house was very clean, we all agreed the beds were comfortable and it was in a great location for walking to nearby pubs and restaurants and for generally exploring Alnwick.
Joseph
The property owner warned us in advance of a problem with the top floor shower beyond her control, which we managed. The property was ideal for all guests, well equipped, and well situated.
Alfred
First class accommodation with a special welcome for families. It is well placed to walk to the famous Barters bookshop and of course the fabulous Alnwick Castle and gardens.
Barbara
We had a very good stay at the old sweet shop the property and facilities were excellent and the location worked very well .
We loved this holiday home. Very comfortable and warm and suitable for family groups. Location is good for attractions in Alnwick so no need to drive. The owner advised us of the maintenance work that had not been completed before our visit. Some lovely local businesses to support too. Local people were all very friendly and chatty.
Ciaran
Absolutely brilliant property. Amazing communication with host, great facilities and spot on location. We stayed here with our family for our wedding and it will forever be memorable as being a great place to stay. 100 recommend.
Andree
We had a lovely time in the Old Sweet Shop. It was the perfect size for a family of 7. The kitchen was very well equipped. We had everything we needed to prepare our meals. We are happy we found this gem.
Rebecca
A super large home for which 6 adults, 1 baby and 1 dog enjoyed a fab week. Lots of space to spread out. The kitchen was very well fitted out with everything you could need to cook with. Location was amazing as just a stroll into town.
A very well appointed and comfortable house with quality bedding and fixtures. Absolutely spotless! There was nothing we could have wanted for. Apart from better weather. Nice welcome basket of scones and other goodies and our dog appreciated the bag of treats. Great location for touring the area. We would very much like to return and highly recommend this holiday home. Thank you Alison.
